Macrame may look incredibly beautiful and complex, but it’s actually super easy to learn! As a beginner you may not be making super large or complicated pieces, but you can definitely make your first project after learning just a few basic knots!

What is macrame?
Macrame is a craft that involves knotting or braiding plant fibres to create decorative patterns. The word macrame comes from the Arabic term "maqrama", meaning "a knot" or "a twist."
While the practice of macrame is often considered to be related to knotting or braiding, it has its own distinct style. Macrame can refer to any technique in which plant fibres are used to make a three-dimensional textile, but it's most often associated with the use of string or rope.
What do you need to get started?
One of the amazing things about DIY macrame is that you really don’t need many things to get started. This is part of what has made it so popular over the years, as it’s a very cheap hobby, and you can even make practical items once you’ve learned.
Basic terms to know:
If you are going to be looking at tutorials online, which we definitely recommend, then there are some important terms that you will want to learn!
Working cord - this is the cord or the set of cords that you are using to make the knots
Filler cord - this is the cords that your knots wrap around
Sennit - this is referring to knots that are worked in repeat
Basic materials to get started:
Macrame cord/string - you can use pretty much any kind of rope or twine, no matter the material. Natural cotton is a very popular option for that natural, boho look, but we also have a variety of coloured strings.
Measuring tape - this can be useful, especially if you need a specific length to your project.
A support - you’ll want something you can tie your knots to, this can be as simple as a branch, hoop, ring, or anything else you may want to attach it to.
Scissors - as always you’ll need a trusty pair of scissors!
What are the main knots in macrame?
If you want to start a macrame craft, then you will need to learn a few basic macrame knots.
The five most important knots to learn as a beginner are the lark’s head knot, cow hitch knot, square knot, double half hitch knot, and the wrapping knot.
There are a lot of amazing tutorials online that show you a step by step guide on how to do many of these essential knots.
With just these first few skills, you can start to make wall hangings, friendship bracelets and even some plant hangers.
When you get more confident with doing these, you can branch out into more advanced knots, such as the spiral knot and horizontal double half hitch.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please don’t! It may seem like a lot at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually very simple. It can be a very therapeutic and soothing craft to do, and doesn’t involve anything like needles which can cause pain if you mess up!
